From New Jersey to Waco: The Heart Behind J&D Smash Burger - 2026 Spring Edition

Some businesses start with a loan or a five-year plan. J&D Smash Burger started with a promise between two people who were just trying to build a future together.

Danny and Jazmin Basha opened their food truck in 2025, but the dream goes back much further. In 2020, while living paycheck to paycheck in New Jersey, they made a simple promise: one day, they would open a food truck of their own. No investors. No guarantees. Just hard work, faith, and each other.

Their story actually began years before that in a small diner in New Jersey. They met working side by side behind the counter, learning what it meant to serve people well, handle pressure, and show up every single day. Danny later became a manager at an upscale restaurant, sharpening his leadership and attention to detail. azmin built her people skills working for AT&T. But the heart of what they do today was formed in that diner — teamwork, resilience, and treating customers like family.

Everything changed during a visit to Waco in 2024. What was supposed to be time with family turned into something bigger. They felt peace here. They felt hope. Texans welcomed them in a way they had never experienced before. Coming from New Jersey, that warmth hit differently. Waco didn’t just feel like a place to move — it felt like home. So in May of last year, they took the biggest leap of their lives. They packed up their belongings, put their dog in the back seat, and drove across the country. They left behind most of their family and everything familiar. In Waco, they only had Jazmin’s sister, Mercy, and her family. No safety net. Just faith and a dream.

That move changed everything. It taught them resilience. It taught them to bet on themselves. And J&D Smash Burger was born from that decision to choose faith over fear.

For Danny and Jazmin, this truck is about more than burgers. It’s their future. It’s their way of building a life and, soon, a bigger family of their own. They are serious about quality — fresh, high-quality ingredients are non-negotiable, even when costs are higher. They would rather do it right than do it cheap.

They also want people to understand that when you order from their window, you’re supporting more than a meal. You’re supporting two people who left everything familiar behind to build something from the ground up. Every burger represents hard work, gratitude, and belief in better days ahead.

What means the most to them, though, is the community. From day one, Waco showed up for them. Encouragement. Repeat customers. Kind words. Genuine support. That welcome shaped them not just as business owners, but as people.

They truly love serving everyone — picky eaters, loyal regulars, first-timers. Customer service is in their blood. They make people laugh at the window because you never know what someone might be carrying that day. If you come for the food, they hope you leave with more than a full stomach. You’ll leave with a smile, too.

When they’re not working, life is simple. Football Sundays at home. Binge-watching a good series. Taking their dogs, Leo and Floki, down to the lake. Margaritas at Hecho en Waco. Cheering at high school football games. They’re still discovering their new hometown, and they’re loving every bit of it.

And if you ever see them trying to park their 16-foot trailer, just know — they’re still learning. That part of the journey has come with plenty of laughs.

Looking ahead, they don’t just see a food truck. They see their first J&D Smash Burger restaurant. They see kids running around. They see a family and a business growing together right here in Waco.

To them, “local” means more than proximity. It means being present. Being accessible. Showing up every day and giving your honest best.

And one smash burger at a time, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
