When Zach and Angela Everett began thinking about life as empty nesters, they didn’t just envision less space — they imagined more meaning. What followed was the creation of Creekside Cottage, a storybook-inspired home nestled along Post Oak Creek that has since become a beloved gathering place and event venue. We asked Angela a few questions to learn more about this beautiful little cottage and all the details that tell the story behind it.
Q: Let’s start at the beginning. What inspired Creekside Cottage?
As Zach and I were approaching empty nesters, we knew we wanted to downsize — but not just in square footage. We wanted to be intentional about the next season of life. For years, I had dreamed of a Hansel-and-Gretel-style cottage tucked into the woods, something cozy and whimsical. And honestly, it felt like now or never. So about three years ago, we found this wooded lot along Post Oak Creek and built our own version of that dream.
Q: What was it like seeing the cottage finished for the first time?
It honestly turned out even more lovely than I expected. Right away, we knew we’d created something special, and we started calling it Creekside Cottage almost immediately. It just fit.
Q: When did you realize this home might become something more than just your personal space?
With six kids and seven grandkids, our house is naturally full of people. We started hosting family gatherings almost immediately — birthdays, casual dinners, holidays — and over and over, guests would tell us the same thing: “This place feels magical.” After hearing that again and again, we realized it wasn’t just us who felt it. About a year ago, we decided we wanted to share that magic by opening Creekside as a venue.
Q: What do you hope guests feel when they arrive?
I hope they feel like they can breathe. Creekside isn’t your typical bustling venue. Things are slower here. There’s something about listening to the wind in the trees, soaking in the sky, and just being still for a moment. It feels healing — and that’s exactly what we want people to experience.
Q: Nature clearly plays a huge role in the space. Was that intentional?
Absolutely. Honestly, nature is our host. Our venue sits right in the middle of the woods, and she sets the atmosphere every time. The squirrels and rabbits show up to every event, and the owls always make an appearance in the evenings. Creekside wasn’t just inspired by nature — it was designed by her.
Q: What are some of the challenges of hosting outdoor events?
Weather, without question. Nature is beautiful but unpredictable. We always encourage guests to have a backup plan — smaller events can move inside, and larger ones can use tents. Once there’s a Plan B, people relax, and the day stays lovely no matter what happens.
Q: What kind of moments have made Creekside Cottage most meaningful to you personally?
Oh, so many. I’ve had long coffee conversations with friends on the patio. I watched our son exchange vows with his bride under a twilight Texas sky and twinkle lights. I’ve seen my grandson build a birdhouse with his Papa, my granddaughters dance like no one was watching, and pink confetti fill the air after a piñata burst open. We’ve laughed late into the night under candlelight by our pergola. Creekside has become a place of connection, and that means everything to us.
Q: When you look ahead, what do you hope for Creekside Cottage’s future?
I see celebrations — maybe more pink or blue confetti floating through the air — but also quiet, sacred moments where vows are exchanged and lives are joined together. I see birthday parties, celebrations of life, retreats marked by stillness and reflection. Mostly, I see people slowing down, breathing deeply, connecting, and having real conversations. That’s the heart of Creekside.
Creekside Cottage began as a dream of downsizing — and became a destination for connection, celebration, and stillness. Tucked into the woods along Post Oak Creek, it’s proof that sometimes the most magical places are the ones built with intention, nature, and heart.
